Zusammenfassung: | Why are people flocking movie theaters (again) since the middle of the 1990s? This book provides some answers with the most striking and strong interaction between the measures of the film industry, the political institutions and the desires of the moviegoers. The focus of the study is on the developments in the Netherlands but similar developments in Europe especially in Germany and France are taken into account. The steps the film industry, especially distributors and movie theatre owners took in their choice of films and the way the films were programmed followed closely the desires and interests of the moviegoers. Besides these initiatives the national governments in Europe and the EU have taken measures to enlarge the choice of films. Film became definitively one of the most important cultural expressions, that can be easily distributed worldwide. The book is divided into two sections. The first section is dedicated to the history of the film industry especially the distribution and exploitation sectors. The second section based on literature in the field of film, social science and economic science gives tangible results of different research on film programming and on the profile of the moviegoer. The research only takes into account the situation up to 2005, but nevertheless the last chapter is dedicated to further developments that especially are related to the digitalization. Über die Autorin: | Dorothee Verdaasdonk is doing research about the film and television industries. She is publishing articles on a regular basis in different journals. She has written some books about Dutch film especially concerning the possibilities of film directors to establish a career. A good example is her PhD Beroep Filmregisseur (Profession Film director) (1990).
